Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, INSEAD and S&V Management Consultants work together to conduct a pioneering research on the Supply Chain organisation and role and profile of the Supply Chain Manager.

Research

As supply chain management is a relatively young management discipline, it is not surprising that little research has been done on these topics in modern companies. The study seeks to find answers to questions such as :

  • which skills will be vital in 3 to 5 years for the supply chain manager?
  • is there a relationship between the educational background of a supply chain manager and the performance of his supply chain?
  • is there a relation between supply chain performance and the way the supply chain is organized?
  • which elements determine the way the supply chain is organized in a company?

Survey

An in depth research has been conducted in more than 50 companies during the last months of 2007.  Between 21 January 10 March 2008 an additional broad e-survey, that takes 20 minutes to fill out, will be conducted online.

Supply Chain Managers, who needs them?

The results of this research will be presented at an exclusive Supply Chain Manager event on April 10th 2008. At this event, we focus on the Supply Chain Manager from a number of different perspectives. Paul Dittmann, faculty member of the University of Tenessee, identifies key areas where CEOs can influence their supply chains and show them how to assess the influence they currently exert. The results of our large-scale, scientific survey provide a thoughtful, academic view of this modern management discipline. From an HR point of view, we elaborate on the skills of the supply chain manager that are needed now and in the future. A CEO places the supply chain organisation within a corporate perspective. Finally, the Supply Chain Managers themselves give their opinions in a panel discussion.
