Dear reader,

Many students, including quite a few from Vlerick, will graduate at the end of this academic year. Some will be taking their first steps along their chosen career path, whilst others will be looking for a new challenge after a period of intellectual revitalisation. The future looks bright for our young talent, as demand for qualified personnel outstrips supply in a number of sectors.

In this issue’s special dossier we’ll be examining both sides of the equation: the search by young talent for the perfect job and the search by companies for talent. We sounded out our students about their career plans, what they feel are the crucial criteria for accepting a job at a particular company and how they go about finding that job.

We also talked to Mary Roll, the new face of Vlerick’s Career Services Office since October 2007. She advises students on the most effective labour market strategies and what job-hunting skills they need to hone. Mary Roll also has her finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the business world and talks about current trends in recruitment, both in Belgium and in emerging markets such as Russia and China, where Vlerick also has MBA students.

And, finally, we wondered how companies are dealing with the shortage of talent. What strategy do they adopt to attract new talent and keep talented employees? We put these questions to Professor Dirk Buyens, head of the Human Resources Management knowledge domain.

As you can see, more than enough material to put together a fascinating dossier. We hope you enjoy reading this issue of Orator and wish you all a relaxing summer!
