The Masters in Financial Management is moving to the Brussels Campus
From Ghent to Brussels
The Vlerick campus in the prestigious Brussels Manhattan Center was officially inaugurated in September of last year and among other things accommodates the Centre for Financial Services, the Vlerick-FEIB CFO Club (the largest CFO organisation in Belgium), the Executive MBA and numerous other courses and events for an international audience. From September 2014, these will be joined by the Masters in Financial Management.
The Masters in Financial Management enjoys an outstanding reputation. The course is in the top 25 of the Financial Times global ranking for Masters in Finance and rises in the ranking year after year. The Masters in Financial Management is also accredited by the renowned CFA Institute. Every year, Vlerick Business School awards several grants for participation in the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exams.
Students who successfully complete the Masters in Financial Management are very much in demand: 94% of last year's students found a suitable job less than three months after graduating. Not only do they start working for financial institutions or in financial positions (for example with the Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, CVC Capital Partners, the Big Four or Gimv), many of them work as strategic consultants for leading players such as McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company and Roland Berger.
The fact that these graduates are doing so well in the market has a great deal, if not everything, to do with the course itself. As Wouter De Maeseneire (Professor of Corporate Finance and programme director of the Masters in Financial Management) explains, it is unique in its field: “In contrast to other masters degrees in finance, which are often theoretical and purely financial and technical in their approach, in this course the emphasis lies on financial management.”
He continues: “Students acquire in-depth knowledge of all facets of financial management, such as corporate finance, taxation, management accounting and cost accounting. In addition, they gain a broader view of how companies operate as they also study non-financial subjects, such as strategy, entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility. A great deal of attention is also paid to the development and improvement of their personal and social skills, such as communication, negotiation, presentation and leadership. The course is also highly applied. We believe in the power of action learning. Students learn by doing, among other things on the basis of business games, case studies, lectures by people who work in the field and a trip to London, where they visit top companies such as Bloomberg, J.P. Morgan and Standard & Poor’s. The Masters in Financial Management not only ends with a thesis but also with an in-company project, a 2-month consultancy placement with a company. And finally, as we do with all our courses, we also provide career guidance.”
Political, financial and economic centre
Brussels, the political, financial and economic centre of Belgium, is barely two hours away from the financial centres of Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Paris. The campus is located in the heart of Brussels, near the TGV station – which ensures easy access – and within walking distance of the European Quarter, which is home to the EU institutions.
“The Masters in Financial Management works together with international organisations and companies for business cases, lectures and presentations. Just like the career events which are organised on the campus, these are excellent opportunities for our students and companies to come into contact with each other”, says Philippe Haspeslagh, the college dean. “And as soon as we have relocated to Brussels, given the vicinity of all the major financial centres and head offices of various multinationals, this should be even easier. We will be able to include even more case studies, organise company visits more easily and attract more companies to our Career Fairs and Recruitment Days.”
International, lively and multicultural
“The Masters in Financial Management, with 45% foreign students, is already our most international master's degree”, continues Philippe. “However, we wish to achieve even greater internationalisation so Brussels is the ideal location. The widest possible diversity in terms of students will only benefit the learning experience.”
Brussels also has a great deal to offer quite independently of the course. This cosmopolitan city spoils its visitors with numerous tourist attractions: parks, museums, cultural events, shops, cafés and restaurants, from the trendy Dansaert area to the chic Zavel and popular Marollen districts. With the presence of various colleges and universities, it will be no surprise to learn that Brussels also has a lively student scene. 9000 students live near the Vlerick campus alone.
Invest one year, gain five
There can be no doubt about it: anyone who wants to learn all about financial management need look no further. Brussels is the place to be and the Masters in Financial Management is the perfect course. Wouter: “We always say ‘invest one year, gain five’, and this certainly applies to our Masters in Financial Management. This masters degree prepares you for an interesting job, increases your opportunities and helps you make quicker progress. What our students gain in maturity from this one year of hard work, and above all the collaboration with other ambitious students in a competitive environment, will prove invaluable during their further career.”
