About Ghent
The city of Ghent, situated
at the confluence of the Leie and Schelde Rivers, has a glorious past, which is
reflected in the numerous castles, churches, cathedrals, abbeys, beguinages and
museums. A stroll through Ghent is a stroll through European political and
cultural history. Medieval Ghent was one of the most populous cities north of
the Alps, overshadowed only by Paris. Charles V was born in Ghent 500 years ago.
It was here that the unsurpassed altarpiece 'The Mystic Lamb' was painted.
Today, Ghent -- which is about 60 km west of Brussels -- is a lively university city in expansion: it is home to a variety of high-tech companies, particularly in the biotechnology sector. Ghent University, founded in 1817, currently boasts over 20,000 students who live and study in this modern historical city.
