Awareness is rising worldwide that renewable energy and energy efficiency are critical for addressing climate change. However, renewable energy technologies combined with an increased demand in energy consumptions put pressure on the industry, policy makers, and regulatory authorities to rethink the organisation of the energy sector.

Many renewable resources are intermittent or variable by nature — producing power inconsistently and somewhat unpredictably — while on the other end of the transmission line, consumers demand power variably but predictably throughout the day. In addition, renewable energy is increasingly produced by a whole range of smaller units spread across the country and owned by various actors such as municipalities, households and businesses.

These changes will have an impact on the current business model of energy providers, transmission operators and distribution system operators. Prof. Meeus will share his findings on a recent study “Outlook on the European DSO Landscape 2020’. Mr. Tshidimba will also give his view on current trends in the energy industry. Finally, Mr. Dossche will explain how the company Restore find a way to balance supply and demand on the energy grid.
