Vlerick Flash October 2008
A new academic year has started, with a new Dean. In his welcoming speech he stated that 'no academic business school will stay a relevant learning partner without a global mindset, a focus on the key management challenges of today's world and an entrepreneurial and customer-focused culture'.
It is of course one of Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School's primary goals to remain entrepreneurial, competitive with a global mindset. In that respect we would like to shine a light on Belgium's improved position in the latest ranking of the global competitiveness. We are also proud to announce that we are the first Belgian school to become a CFA Program Partner and an accredited member of CLADEA.
In this Flash you can also read about burning issues in the knowledge domains of HRM and IT.

The new ranking of the global competitiveness report of 2008-2009, designed by the World Economic Forum, and for which Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School is the partner institute, revealed that this year Belgium improved slightly on its competitiveness.
Based on a comprehensive survey which questioned 12.297 business leaders in 134 countries and the use of hard data on different aspects of an economy’s competitiveness, Belgium has been evaluated as the 19th most competitive economy in the world. The improvement follows a status quo of last two years at the 20th position.

Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School is now officially the first Belgian school to become a CFA Program Partner.
The CFA designation is globally recognised and a highly desired standard for investment professionals. The partnership means that the classes in the Vlerick Master in Financial Management (MFM) cover at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge. This places successful students with an excellent foundation to enter and build a career in the investment industry.

Belgian IT professional uncertain about ethical boundaries
The Belgian IT professional does not have a clear view on ethical matters. There are large differences of opinion about what is, and what is not, ethically sound behaviour. These findings appear in a new study conducted by Prof. Dirk Deschoolmeester and researcher Joachim Van den Bergh of Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. The researchers would like to use this study to initiate further professionalisation of the computer science profession.
The study focuses on IT professionals in the ICT sector and in companies that make use of IT. Via a number of channels (including IT Professional), they were asked to fill in an anonymous online questionnaire.

HRM challenges for growing organisations
A growing company not only experiences an increase in turnover and customer database, but the number of personnel usually rises too. A stumbling block for many entrepreneurs, who are often more inclined to focus on their production, accounting and marketing. Still, attracting and retaining staff members is one of the greatest challenges for these promising enterprises.
