Generation Y: optimistic, responsible and demanding
Researchers
at the Centre
for Excellence in Career Management at Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School
have investigated job market expectations of
Generation
Y for the sixth year in a row. Almost 1,100 respondents participated in the
survey and despite reports of cutbacks, bankruptcies and lower recruitment
rates, the young people in the sample remained relatively optimistic about their
first steps on the career ladder.
Not only do the jobseekers believe their chances of success are high despite the current economic climate, but they also have high expectations regarding remuneration, benefits, career opportunities and autonomy. In return, they are prepared to take responsibility for their career progress, follow additional courses on their own initiative, and can offer employers assurance in terms of performance, collegiality and ethical behaviour. However, they have a particular need for feedback on performance and opportunities for continuing education and offer a relatively low level of loyalty, expecting to leave their first employer for a better job within 3 years.
