Advanced Management Programme Reloaded: Brain food for seasoned managers
27 Jun 2008The Advanced Management Programme (AMP) provides experienced managers and entrepreneurs with the very best that Vlerick has to offer. Yet more and more participants then ask “What’s next?”. “AMP Reloaded” is the answer.
The Advanced Management Programme (AMP) is one of Vlerick’s longest running programmes for executives and senior managers who want to take time out of their busy schedules to delve deeper into the essentials of management. The AMP has been run in its current format for the past 15 years and now has some 300 alumni. Over a one-year period, a group of about 20 participants complete eight two-day modules, giving them a “helicopter view” of general management topics, before embarking on a final module in which they work on a special project. Core subjects covered include strategy, finance, innovation, leadership, HR, diversity and change management. The combination of first-rate instructors, state-of-the-art expertise in numerous management fields and participants with many years’ experience under their belt consistently stimulates fruitful cross-fertilisation.
400 years of experience
Participants in the AMP include entrepreneurs and managers who have 10 to 20 years’ professional experience, come from a variety of sectors and work in companies of all sizes. “In a group of just over 20 participants, that quickly adds up to 400 years of experience,” comments Patrick De Greve. “This kind of audience sets high standards and you have to be able to live up to those. With the new talent that our School is constantly attracting and the new topics that our competence centres are pursuing, it’s possible to take on this challenge. One of the basic requirements is to have first-rate instructors who know how to keep a group of high-level participants enthralled for two days. That’s where our programme differs so radically from a simple two-hour lecture, which can never make such a lasting impression or have the same learning effect.”
Gurus and trends: what are they worth?
“Our target group is eager to learn, highly literate and prepared to set aside considerable time for reflection,” observes Patrick De Greve. “With AMP and the supplementary programme AMP Reloaded, we offer a guide through the confusing array of management insights. Which gurus and trends are simply a hype, and which withstand the test of time? Naturally we provide state-of-the-art input, but in an academic environment it’s impossible to make fundamental breakthroughs year after year. Usually there’s only 20 to 30% new material available in some fields. And it’s just as important to brush up on the ‘evergreens’. Immune from all hype, there are older business models and business concepts that are still successful today.”
Downtime
“Transfer of know-how, exchange of experience and networking are all part of the programme,” stresses Patrick De Greve. “We attract high-quality participants who are a vital ingredient in the success of the programme. That’s why they have to be prepared to take 18 days’ downtime away from the job. Although that’s already quite some achievement given a senior manager’s schedule, alumni were always asking us for a follow-up to the Advanced Management Programme. Exclusively for those participants, we’ve now put together ‘AMP Reloaded’, a supplementary programme comprising three two-day modules.”
Three top-class tutors
Last year 20 people were given the chance to try out the first AMP Reloaded, and the programme will be repeated this coming autumn. Patrick De Greve again: “Professors Marcus Alexander, Kalun Tse and David Venter each have a unique CV, with a wealth of both academic and practical experience to their name. Last but not least, they all have a warm, inspiring personality. Within their respective fields, they each convey a powerful message. Professor Alexander talks about strategic leadership, Professor Tse tackles the optimisation of value creation, while Professor Venter focuses on top-level negotiation and conflict mediation. The modules are so strong that we’re thinking about incorporating them into the basic programme. We’d then be faced with a new challenge: finding three instructors and topics of equal quality for a new AMP Reloaded…”
