Business is like football: you have to be agile to hit your goal

Like many kids growing up in football-playing countries, Matthijs Keersebilck (Executive MBA 2013) wanted to become a professional football player like his hero Gaizka Mendieta who played for Valencia.

As he pursued his education, he entered the drama school youth movement to develop his communication abilities. After his studies, he seized the opportunity to work for Club Brugge, one of Belgium’s premiere football clubs. Today, he’s working for Lagardère Sports (a French company based in Paris) as Head of Sales in Belgium for Euro 2016.

“People view football as a very glamourous business. But fundamentally it’s like all businesses − with the same challenges and the same targets. My Vlerick studies have been important for me in two key ways: first of all, the Vlerick degree really boosts your career; and secondly, you acquire the skills for communicating more effectively with other departments in a company.”

By using his communication and business skills in football environments, Matthijs has created a career journey in which he applies his professional talents to his life-long passion!

Key message:
“When you dream of achieving something, you have to plan it. An example: 5 months ago, I had difficulty running 5 km − yesterday, I ran the Marathon in Amsterdam.”
