 Maia McCarron MFM

Maia McCarron, Delta Partners “I am currently based in Dubai working for Delta Partners, a strategy consulting firm that focuses primarily on telecommunications in emerging markets. Having spoken with them at the Financial and Consulting Career Fair, I was very interested in the prospect of such an international career and so I submitted my CV. Following several interviews via Skype, I received the exciting offer to move to the UAE. Only a few days after graduation I was in sunny Dubai, a far cry from medieval Ghent, and staffed on a location-based management project for a large telecommunications operator in the Middle East. As a junior team member, I supported the team in conducting analyses and building presentations, and had significant interactions with the client right from the start. Expectations were high, but I felt my education at Vlerick had more than adequately prepared me. Courses such as Strategic Management, Business Planning and Management Control were very useful, but the soft skills gained through countless team assignments and the In-company Project were especially key for a job where interpersonal skills are so important.”

Jan Speelman MFM Jan Speelman, BCG
Associate

“As Associate at the Boston Consulting Group, I get to work with executives of the world’s largest companies on the strategic questions that keep them awake at night. In a nutshell, I interact with clients, do quantitative and qualitative analysis, generate insights and develop presentations to share our findings. Pretty challenging for a young graduate, but I often fall back on the knowledge and skills I acquired during the MFM programme. Thanks to Vlerick’s pragmatic approach to teaching - the examples from experienced professors, case studies, business games and an In-company Project, you internalize the theory and learn to apply it in real life. I use many of the hard skills I acquired on a daily basis when making financial models or analysing a company’s strategy. I also benefitted a lot from the soft skills trainings on personal behaviour and group dynamics during teamwork, negotiation, presenting and career coaching. Most importantly, having spent a year with a class of highly motivated peers in the intense and challenging Vlerick environment has provided me with a high level of maturity. I strongly believe that you can leverage and benefit from everything Vlerick provides you with throughout your entire career and in your personal life.”

Christophe Michotte Christophe Michotte, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Investment banking analyst

“I am working as an investment banking analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Working in London at such a great institution has been a dream. In my first year, I already completed three M&A deals and have been in regular contact with very senior people at large corporations throughout the world. Vlerick unquestionably increased my chances for breaking into banking as they introduce you to several Vlerick alumni working in this field. In addition, career services organize sessions on how to apply for jobs in London. These resources gave me the necessary insight to tackle the application process effectively. MFM also definitely contributed in preparing me adequately for a role in banking as you are expected to have a good knowledge of accounting, corporate finance and valuation. All these topics are covered in depth from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. In summary, MFM provides you with an excellent toolbox to fast track your career towards the top finance jobs.Choose MFM, you will not regret it!”

“The MFM programme offers a highly efficient combination of key business fundamentals, “soft” skills, and lots of networking opportunities. I found the classroom discussions to be truly unique. The format of two-way interaction between professor and students makes the year at Vlerick all the more enriching. Many of the professors have an impressive track record and a lot of experience in the financial industry. Their passion for their respective subjects made them challenge our fundamental structures in finance, always pointing out the difference between theory and how it is done in reality. One of the highlights of the programme was definitely the London study trip. This trip helped many of us not only to understand how financial institutions work, but also to create a network and be invited for interviews with some of the most important players in the financial markets. It actually also made us realise that as an MFM student you fit many corporate profiles, ranging from investment banking to consulting and auditing. All of this, together with the multicultural composition of our class, contributed to changing most of my fundamental viewpoints on finance, the world and myself.”

ToiLetMeKnow, or how Hackathons can create opportunities
Date: 29 November 2016

The great thing about Vlerick is that it encourages you to participate in business games, case studies, and hackathons. Hacka-what, I hear you saying? A hackathon, in the traditional sense, is a rat-race, sprint-like competition in which software developers along with subject-matter-experts work on a disruptive project during a limited amount of time ranging from […]
