Leadership & Organisational Change
The first aim of this course is to develop the leadership skills needed to harness human capital in a global economy and across situations. The successful student will be able at the end of this course to create leadership strategies that take into account both the particularities of its human capital and the international context in which it has to operate.
As a second aim, the course provides access to the most important precondition of successful leadership: an organization. Since organizational excellence requires more than managing formal structures, the successful student will be able to diagnose and shape all ‘three faces’ of an organization and to lay ground for long-termed success. Since the need for permanent adjustment and re-invention is omnipresent in modern business world, the course provides finally the ability to plan and execute organizational change efforts successfully.
Strategic Thinking and Practice
The Strategy course will focus on formulating and implementing business and corporate strategy to achieve superior performance. Successful business policies require a detailed understanding of the overall environment and the ability to create value for customers in the face of competition. Successful business policies also require analytical and administrative capabilities.
The purpose of the course in strategic management is to make participants familiar with the core concepts and techniques that function as foundations for formulating and implementing successful strategies. However, its basic intent is not on mastering specific analytical tools but rather on using strategic thinking and the development of a managerial attitude to guide actions in the face of uncertainty and complexity. So the main focus of the course is to learn how to use and apply these skills when judging complex management situations.
The distinctive contribution of the strategic management course is that it integrates the different perspectives that you have already learned and allows you to apply these perspectives to complex and realistic general management situations. By learning to view the business from a holistic perspective, you will develop your ability to think beyond the day-to-day business activities and your ability to ask the right questions about the future of the business. Those skills, more than any other, will make you an effective general manager. The ultimate goal of this course is therefore to develop your judgment as a general manager.
Taking Sound Business Decisions
In the last decades companies have made significant investments in information systems. As a result, today, a wealth of data is available to managers to support their decision making. In this course we will introduce tools from the domain of “management science”. We will review optimization modelling, simulation modelling, time series and decision trees. As we will see, these models are applicable to a wide variety of management situations. Modelling is an art that can only be learnt by practice, as such we will spend sufficient time on practicing through class room, group and individual exercises.
Concepts and Techniques in Financial Management
The course is premised on the understanding that practically every decision taken by a business has financial implications. Consequently insights are provided into how the financial health of a company should be evaluated, how different investment and financing decisions interact, and how the objectives of a business are to be achieved. By way of lectures, case studies and a project, participants are inspired to apply fundamental concepts and tools in corporate finance to the business world.
The course immerses participants in the entrepreneurial process from the perspective of a practitioner, providing them with greater insight into developing opportunities into viable business models that spawn growing new ventures. With the help of a multi-disciplinary business game that ultimately requires a business plan to be devised for a start-up company, the most important entrepreneurial principles are entrenched.
Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability
In a world that is characterised by an ever-changing and complex system shaped by globalisation, new modes of regulation and technological changes, managers are faced with increasing calls for sustainable forms of development, stakeholder scrutiny, corporate scandals and cultural and ideological conflicts that pose new risks and challenges for business. Through lectures, discussions, business testimonials and teamwork, the course provides a view of the relationship between business and society, highlighting the social, environmental and economic responsibilities major corporations face and the tensions that exist between these responsibilities. Participants are also given an insight into the limitations and benefits related to responsible management in the highly competitive global business environment, an understanding of the major stakeholders that interact with corporates, and are given the concepts and tools to confront CSR issues.
It is almost impossible to become a great leader without being a good communicator. The field of communication is ginormous! The aim of the course is is to give you a “guided tour” of the terrain. The concrete objectives of this course are:
- To help students to develop some key communication and leadership competences.
- To introduce you to some moments of truth in communication: group decision making, feedback, difficult conversations
- To enhance your understanding of why people behave as they do in organizations
- To increase your own effectiveness as a manager and team member by introducing you to frameworks that enhance your understanding of how people and groups behave.
In order to realise these objectives a 2-day interactive course is organised. By and large, 3 general topics will be covered: high impact communication, feedback, leadership, group decision making and people management/coaching. We will use a mixture of brief introductory presentations about basic principles and practical exercises. The exercises will allow you to experience how some important management principles work out in practice.
