Time and money among entrepreneurs in rural Africa: Steps into the unknown

Jacob Vermeire

What was my dream when I was little?

I always wanted to become a carpenter and go to work by horse.

What am I doing when I am not working on my PhD?

My best way to relax is just to listen to my fiancée’s advice to take time to relax. Our 2 little children also have substantial positive effects on how I spend my ‘free time’. I also try to go to judo training at least once a week.

What is my PhD about?

My PhD study focuses on the role of time in the entrepreneurial process.

Why is this important for practice?

The reason this is important for practice is because it is easier to promote entrepreneurship (in developing regions) if its temporal dynamics are better understood.

How do I like to be remembered after my PhD?

I would like to be remembered as a PhD student who realised a dream by living and studying for one year in Africa, together with his fiancée and our 2 daughters.

How do I see my future?

I have a strong ambition to be passionate about the things I do in life.

How can entrepreneurship fight poverty?

Antonia Esser, R&D Project Officer, Small Enterprise Foundation (South Africa)

What convinced you to take part in this PhD research?

As SEF we strive to alleviate the poverty of our clients. We do not have the resources or time necessary to look at some issues deeply enough. Therefore, we appreciate any research that can shine light on ongoing issues. Due to the reputation of Vlerick Business School and the relevancy of the topic we were happy to work with Jacob on this topic.

Why is this research relevant to your company?

This research is relevant to SEF because we have been searching for a while of ways to research how our clients decide to use our loans. We are involved in financial diary research and this PhD is a great addition to this to explore the behaviours behind business decisions.

How did you apply the research results in your company?

As the research is still ongoing we have not applied the results as such. We have been given continuous updates on the progress and hope to implement any recommendation that might emerge from the final research product.
