Quota: A virtual limit on a shared drive

  1. How do I check the amount of disk space used on my personal drive?
  2. How do I copy my files from CD-ROM to my personal drive?

Why :

For employees this will be 2 GB. For students 200 MB.
If we do not put a quota on it, users can use a limitless amount of disk space.
If we do that, then we will need to put a new hard disk in our servers every month.

Solution :

If you have files that you are not working with, (just to look up), or files that are not used in a year. Put them on a CD-ROM.

1. How do I check the amount of disk space used on my personal drive?
  1. Open with your 'Windows Explorer' and then your personal drive (for most users this will be your M-drive),
  2. Right-click or use the 'File' menu and select 'Properties',
  3. You will now see "Used Space", "Free Space" and "Capacity".

If you are about to go over your quota you will get the following message:

There are also some file types that are not allowed on the shares.
executable files : *.exe, *.bat, *.cmd, *.inf, *.js, ....
system files : *.dll, *.sys, *.ocx, *.vxd

2. How do I copy my files from CD-ROM to my personal drive?
  1. Select on your CD the files needed.
  2. Copy them to your personal drive.
  3. Select your new files on your personal drive.
  4. Right-click, or use the 'File' menu, and select 'Properties'.
  5. Deselect the attribute "Read-only".
