1. General

This FAQ file gives you some more information about the use of Skype on the Vlerick network and computers.

2. What is Skype?

Skype is a free Internet telephony product that uses peer-to-peer (P2P) networking protocols. This allows users to make free Internet-based phone calls.

3. Can Skype be used on Vlerick?

Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School does not allow the use of Skype on the School's computers or network for two main reasons:

  • Skype uses excessive network resources.
  • The Skype User Agreement makes the user agree to provide services to Skype for resources owned by the School. Individual users are not empowered to give such consent.
Instances of Skype have been found to be the highest users of network resources. This is likely because the software can act as a Supernode. From the Skype privacy policy:
"A Supernode is a computer running Skype Software that has been automatically elevated to act as a hub. Supernodes may assist in helping other users to communicate or use the Skype Software efficiently. This may include the ability for your computer to help anonymously and securely facilitate communications between other users of the Skype software who, due to network and firewall constraints, cannot establish direct connections."

Therefore, running Skype means your system can (and probably will) participate in providing Voice over IP (VoIP - internet phone calls) services outside of your direction and control. You are also agreeing to provide services to Skype for resources owned by the School.

4. How to safely use Skype while conforming to the School's Policy?

We do not allow Skype on the network or Vlerick computers, however, some alternatives are worked out.

Vlerick Employees

There is a Skype computer available in every campus:

  • Leuven : 4th floor
  • Ghent: room M1.6

Should you need access, please open an Altiris call.

Vlerick Students

There is a Skype computer available in every campus:

  • Leuven : floor -1, in the cupboard in front of the elevators
  • Ghent: room M1.6

5. How to use Skype from the wireless network?

For the Leuven campus, you can also use Skype from your own non-Vlerick computer when connecting to the Vlerick wireless network. Just choose this network from the available wireless networks and log on with your Vlerick credentials.

For the Ghent campus, there is a project planned and budgeted this year (2007) to implement the same wireless access. When this is implemented, Skype can be used on the Ghent Guest wireless network as well.

6. Logging in

  1. To use the Skype PC you have to login with a fixed userID and password.
You can find the logon credentials to login to the PC on the screen of the PC.

  2. Start up Skype and fill in your Skype credentials.
If you do not have your own Skype credentials you will have to create one: start Skype and follow these instructions to create your own Skype account

  3. To have some privacy when using Skype a headset and microphone is attached to the PC.
