Discover the dream of Alexander

What was your dream when you were little?

When I was a little boy, I dreamed of becoming a fireman.

How has your dream evolved? What happened with it?

When I think about a fireman, I think about urgency, crisis, fast thinking and remaining calm. Throughout my career I have always been looking for those characteristics. I have always tried to go abroad, to explore, to learn continuously, to challenge my current beliefs and get out of my comfort zone. I’ve experienced that once I’m in my comfort zone, I become a lot less creative and sharp. I need some tension or stress to be productive. So, in a way, my dream has never really changed.

How do you see your future?

I’m currently working in a multinational company that gives me a lot of opportunities in terms of career, training and responsibility. I hope to continue on this path and to learn even more, maybe also in another role. Later on I want to run my own business where I can use this experience to build up something in the way I really want it.

How has Vlerick contributed to realising your dream?

Thanks to Vlerick, I have discovered a lot more opportunities like, for example, working abroad. But I have especially met many people that have a similar drive and ambition to go forward in life. Having discussions with them, learning about their views and keeping track of their career path is probably one of the best sources of ideas and opportunities. The great thing about it, is that it is something you keep even long after youhave graduated at Vlerick.

What is the key message you want people to take away from your personal story?

Be open, persistent and never stop asking questions.

  • Some of my best experiences originate from spontaneous moments and discussions with people.
  • When you really want something, be persistent and find alternative ways to get to your goal.
  • Listen to people and ask them questions, never take something as a given.
