How to turn waste into gold?

As a kid, Philippe Jans (Part-time MBA, 2010) wanted to become an engineer. He also felt that being an engineer in a big company would not allow him to be completely free to do exactly as he wanted.

So, in 2011, together with partners Jan Palmaers and Jonathan Schrauwen, Philippe founded Biolectric to produce biogas as a source of energy for farms.

Biolectric’s small-scale biogas installation uses an anaerobic fermentation process to convert manure into green energy, which can be used in the form of electricity and heat. Reducing the farm’s CO₂ footprint, keeping methane out of the atmosphere, and − most important for joggers in the fresh air − reducing the odour.

“Vlerick helped me make the transition from being a very technical engineer to being an entrepreneur with a technical background. I have lots of fond memories of my time at Vlerick: the sessions, my fellow participants, all in a very challenging − and enjoyable − atmosphere.”

Key message:
“Remember that life passes quickly − do what you want to do today, not next year!”
