“The SME Challenge is the ideal way to hold a mirror up to yourself and your company. Is your business model still viable? Do you have the right focus? Are you selling your services properly? Everything that seems self-evident is challenged and questioned. Thanks to this programme, we learned to aim higher with our company, and we succeeded in making the right decisions. The programme gave us a critical sounding-board and access to theoretical insights. The other participants were also a great enrichment: new, sustainable contacts that have grown into partnerships for exciting and innovative projects. Highly recommended for every SME that wants to grow and deliver the best of itself!”

“As people with different profiles and backgrounds take this course, you are confronted with reflexes which are less quickly addressed in our own sector. By nature, we don’t tend to lie awake at night thinking about profit, growth, optimisation processes… I found the perspective of people who do just that fascinating. It also gave me the insight that it’s not wrong to think that way, either.”

“The programme provided the guidelines I needed. The theoretical framework gave me a language to manage the financial, more operational side of the agency. Among other things, the coaching process generated the business plan which we are currently using. These tools gave me a clear overview of the firm and allowed me to think along with the others about the future.”

  1. 822 firms are the driving force behind Belgian job creation

A group of 822 high-growth firms accounts for one in three jobs created by private companies with a minimum of ten employees. These high-growth firms represent just 3.5% of Belgian businesses with a minimum of ten employees. A small minority of 3.5% of Belgian businesses with a minimum of ten employees is responsible for the creation of 45,947 jobs. This amounts to 67% of the total net number of jobs created by business with a minimum of ten employees in the period from 2014 to 2017. This is apparent from the results of the annual Belgian High-Growth Monitor.
  2. Young Belgian scale-ups consider the world their playground

Young Belgian companies with ambitions to grow set the bar for growth higher and higher. These scale-ups do not shy away from taking the step to sell aboard, where they generate nearly 30 percent of their total turnover. They are growing smart and are doing so primarily through less risk and hybrid ways for growth, such as licences and strategic alliances. Finally, the average salary that the founders pay themselves has remained constant in the last three years. These are the most significant conclusions of the third edition of the Rising Star Monitor. This annual survey by the Vlerick Business School and Deloitte Belgium provides insight into the trends and challenges for young Belgian companies with growth potential.
