How does Corporate Governance affect M&A decisions and outcomes?

Corneel Defrancq

What was my dream when I was little?

I never had this dream to be something specific, though in high school I decided that biology was not my cup of tea, which already crosses quite some knowledge domains of the list. With hindsight, there might be a causal relation between my grades for the biology course and me disliking the subject.

What am I doing when I am not working on my PhD?

When I’m not working on my PhD, I try to finish the works on our house, read some off topic stuff, watch series/movies, go for a run, hang out with friends.

What is my PhD about?

My study focuses on corporate governance within mergers and acquisitions (M&As).

Why is this important for practice?

As the majority of M&A deals are classified as failures and very little is known about the reasons, we argue that some of the explanation lies in broadly defined corporate governance effects (e.g. ownership, board).

How do I like to be remembered after my PhD?

Although it is very likely that the PhD thesis itself won’t be read by large audiences, I hope to inspire those who do pick it up or those with whom I discuss concepts from this thesis.

How do I see my future?

Starting the PhD, the ambitions were skyhigh. Along the way, I changed my mindset that the PhD is a kind of platform upon which you can build your future career, whether you pursue this in academia or somewhere else.
