Building bridges between mathematics, finance and economics

Sladana Babic

What was my dream when I was little?

I had tons of unrealistic dreams.

What am I doing when I am not working on my PhD?

I like to spend as much time as possible with my loved ones.

What is my PhD about?

My PhD is about multi-tail distributions and tail networks framed in global risks in economics and finance. The rationale for this PhD project is grounded on empirical facts, as the World Economic Forum is warning since recent years that the world is not equipped to deal with global risks or similar occurrences in the future. Successfully addressing these complex and interconnected global risks necessitates sound quantification that, up to date, is missing. Or, to put it technically, this project is about the analysis of extreme events in vast dimensional systems.

Why is this important for practice?

Recent history has shown us that tail – or rare – events may pose global risks to the financial and economic systems. This project will equip experts and decision makers with a toolkit for dealing with global risks or similar occurrences in the future.

How do I like to be remembered after my PhD?

A PhD, like other university programs, is a training process; you will be trained to be a researcher or an academic. I guess, every researcher wants to be remembered as someone who contributed something valuable to her or his field.

How do I see my future?

You can not figure out the future, so I think I will just embrace uncertainty.
