What was my dream when I was little?

During my entire childhood, I wanted to become a marine biologist and make sea-life documentaries or under-water photographs. I have always been fascinated about what happens under the surface of the sea and it is still a dream of mine to learn how to deep dive. In the end, my interest in what happens within the human body took over which is why I became a biomedical scientist.

What am I doing when I am not working on my PhD?

Three days a week you can find me on the hockey field. Playing hockey has been my passion for over 10 years and I don’t intend to stop soon. I not only like the physical activity and the game itself but I also love being part of a team that fights together for that win. Otherwise, you will typically find me around my friends and family having a good meal together. Although I adore all that activity, I can very much enjoy a quiet night on my couch with a captivating book or movie and a good cup of tea.  

What is my PhD about?

More and more innovative, and in my eyes often surrealistic, therapies are being developed. Think about treatments that can add new DNA to cure people from genetic diseases. However, as many medicines, these new therapies are not marketed cheaply. This is where my PhD comes in. New financing systems are needed to bring these expensive therapies to the patients that need them. However, the implementation of these new systems has proven difficult. Therefore, I aim to build a new framework to not only guide the assessment of these therapies but also make sure that we can afford them.

Why is this important for practice?

Our healthcare system is under great pressure due to the development of many new advanced medicines and technologies. Furthermore, these advanced therapies can often cure previously incurable diseases. Therefore, we need to ensure our healthcare sustainability and also focus on equitable access of medicines to all patients. During my PhD, I hope to contribute to both goals. These new financing systems will be tailormade for innovative therapies. They will on the one hand make sure that the government will be able to provide these new treatments and on the other hand ensure that patients can easily access them without any financial burden.

How do I like to be remembered after my PhD?

I would like to be remembered as a driven researcher who not only looks at the research itself but also at its applicability in the day-to-day workings of our society. I also hope that I will be able to collaborate with other PhDs and researchers by always having an open door.

How do I see my future?

Although you may never know what the future holds, I would love to see the findings of my PhD come to life in a real-life setting. Either by participating on a governmental level or helping pharmaceutical companies to bring these new technologies to the patient.
