    Category: Student News

In May and June, students Fabrice Verhaert and Stijn Van der Putten spent a month in Mali where, together with GreenVentures, they installed solar energy-based mini grids or ‘FlexGrids’. What began with fine-tuning a financial plan led to an educational path of social, international and innovative enterpreneurship. Recognition soon followed, in the form of substantial European financing for FlexGrid on the one hand and the first Soudal Award for Social Entrepreneurship on the other.

Recently, 65 Flemish CEOs travelled to San Francisco for a week to visit several major companies, including Google, Samsung and Cisco, and to attend lectures at Stanford and Berkeley Universities. The aim of the trip was to give them access to first-hand knowledge about local corporate culture and working methods. The participating CEOs are all members of the Impulse Centre ‘Growth Management for Medium-Sized Enterprises’ (iGMO) at Vlerick Business School. Every two years, iGMO explores a new destination.

  4. Let go of what you know

    Date:
    Category: Opinions

We often hear that Belgians tend to stick to their roots. Many of us live and work close to the place where we were born and raised. The same goes for entrepreneurs, and not only in Belgium. International research has shown that when deciding where to set up their business, entrepreneurs focus more on things like being close to friends and family than on looking for the location that would guarantee the best results for their company. But tapping into the unknown can also have great benefits.

  5. Venture Design for entrepreneurs – think first, then act

    Date:
    Category: Opinions

Design and business. Two things that have more in common than you might surmise at first glance. Anyone toying with a good idea for launching a new product or service is often told to hit the ground running and go to market quickly, with the underlying idea being “just give it a try”. This involves a process of trial and error, and sometimes investments do not always have the desired results. Venture Design works the other way around. It requires you to stop and think, then develop an overall concept so you can launch your product to market with a substantial lead.

A recent knowledge collaboration with Vlerick’s Energy Centre allows them to connect to the huge potential of our young and innovative Masters- and MBA-students, who have the necessary skills to look at the energy access issue with a fresh perspective. Vlerick, in turn, can tap into the extensive ARE network of entrepreneurs, financiers, and public and private partners. As a first concrete result, the students taking part in our brand-new Renewable Energy boot camp will travel to the ARE conference in Lisbon to put their knowledge into action and solve a selection of participating social entrepreneurs’ real-life challenges.

After an intense deliberation and complements for the track record of all participants, the interuniversity jury decided to grant the best researcher award to two people. Veroniek Collewaert and Yuliya Shymko are both professors within the area Entrepreneurship, Strategy & Governance.

  9. Setting up a company? Ask the right questions!

    Date:
    Category: Opinions

One of the first decisions entrepreneurs need to make is whether or not to embark on this adventure alone. If not, who will they team up with? Every person you welcome into your founders’ team brings potential difficulties as well as new opportunities. In reality, entrepreneurs rarely weigh up the pros and cons. Do a person’s skills and knowledge justify the extra costs they will create? Furthermore are those the right skills and do we need them right now? These are just a few questions every entrepreneur should ask.

  10. A Belgian unicorn? Why not!

    Date:
    Category: Partner News

Deloitte’s Technology’s recent FAST 50 competition put young and promising tech companies in the spotlight. Frederik Falepin from Deloitte and Veroniek Collewaert, professor of Entrepreneurship and jury member, are critical of the average young Belgian technology entrepreneur, however, claiming that they have “insufficient ambition to grow internationally.”
