    Category: Opinions

Due to the current health crisis, our lives have become digitalized at an overwhelming speed. Despite of this new digital literacy, we have also developed new, potentially more demanding needs for satisfying digital connectivity. According to Professor Fredrik Hacklin, we may not necessarily experience a fatigue from the digital medium per se, but simply from the type of content. We seem to be on a transition of silently moving away from a one-to-many based social media, broadcasting easy-to-consume content, that is of mere informative intent and accessible to a large audience. Instead, we are embracing one-to-one or one-to-fewer interaction: direct connection, longer periods of engagement, deeper levels of insight.

How can we optimise our product pallets – preferably using automation? That was the challenge that Masters in General Management students Hannelore Houf and Charlotte De Vuyst – both supply chain newbies – took on for their in-company project at multinational Ontex. Good grades weren’t the only positive result of their efforts. “Our teams across various departments are now putting into practice the theoretical groundwork they laid over a two-month period.”

Most of the management principles which we apply today were actually invented 100 years ago. To a great extent, we are still stuck in the basic ideas of that time. According to Dean Marion Debruyne we cannot run and manage organisations which need to be ready for the 21st century using principles from the last century. Along with technological change, we need management change and a different kind of leadership. That’s why unlearning old mental models is just as important as learning new things.
