Brecht is a doctoral researcher who focuses on the intersection of entrepreneurship and the evaluation of company performance. He works in close collaboration with Professor Veroniek Collewaert.
The most common way for managers to assess their company’s performance is to compare current reality with past performance and industry peers. These reference points are known as aspirations – and when organisations don’t achieve them, they initiate strategic responses.
Brecht’s work aims to advance this theory by introducing new reference points for evaluating performance. Specifically, he explores how venture capitalists may push companies to look to different reference points.
His work aims to uncover the impact of aspirations on strategic change. He also compares the relative importance of aspirations in VC-backed companies with those in non-VC-backed companies.
In addition to his doctoral research, Brecht also contributes to research for Vlerick’s Impulse Centre: Growth Management for Medium-sized Enterprises.
