Carl-Erik Heyvaert

Doctoral Researcher, Accounting & Finance

Carl-Erik’s research focuses on AI and data science – and how they apply to various finance departments

Carl-Erik Heyvaert is a doctoral researcher at Vlerick and KU Leuven. He studies how AI tools and Natural Language Processing (NLP) can be applied to risk management, financial reporting and management accounting. His PhD assesses the transparency, trustworthiness and informativeness of risk factor disclosures – and measures their predictive power on business valuation.

Carl-Erik actively contributes to the Centre for Financial Leadership and Digital Transformation, where he collaborates with Professor Kristof Stouthuysen. He’s involved in the data science elective and data science bootcamp. And he provides teaching support on various courses – including Accounting for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Introduction to Financial Accounting, Introduction to Cost Accounting and Strategic Management Accounting.

Before starting his PhD, Carl-Erik gained experience through internships in the RPA departments at both KBC and DPG Media. He also worked at Cronos Group, where he built a Face Recognition System in Python and experimented with Voice-To-Speech and chatbots.
