

Paul Geertsema
Associate Professor of Accounting and AI
Is an expert in accounting, finance and AI. He’s published work in leading journals – and worked at top organisations.
Paul uses contemporary AI approaches to solve accounting and finance problems. He believes that combining appropriate analytical tools with a deep understanding of real-world business is the key to creating effective solutions.
He’s published work in leading international journals – including the Journal of Banking and Finance and the Journal of Accounting Research. And he’s the author of Machine Learning for Managers – a practitioner’s guide to using machine learning to create business value.
Before starting his academic career, Paul held several roles at Barclays Capital. He worked as a credit derivatives trader in Hong Kong, managing $2bn of proprietary capital. And in London, he was a sell-side research analyst, responsible for research coverage of $100bn of securitised assets. He has also worked as a risk analyst at Credit Suisse and IT project lead at Citibank.
Paul was a founding member of the AI Researchers Association – and served on the board from 2022 to 2024. He was also a director of boutique consultancy North Shore Consulting from 2009 to 2024.
